How to Choose Custom Drapery for Your Home

Custom drapery can do more than frame a window. The right fabric, lining, length, and hardware can bring color and texture into a room, help manage natural light, and make a space feel more finished.

Before

After

At WM Spaces, I look at both the way a room needs to function and the way you want it to feel. Here are the key decisions to consider when choosing custom drapery for your home.

1. Start With the Purpose of Your Custom Drapery

Before selecting fabric, think about what you want your window treatments to do. Do you need privacy, light control, a softer look, or a finishing layer of color and texture? Consider how you use the room, too. A bedroom may need more light control, while a living room may benefit from filtered daylight.

The window itself matters. Tall ceilings, unusually wide windows, or distinctive architectural details can make ready-made curtains difficult to fit well. Custom drapery gives you more flexibility with dimensions and placement. It also helps to establish a realistic budget early, since fabric, lining, fullness, and hardware all affect the final cost.

2. Choose the Right Fabric for Your Custom Drapery

Fabric sets the tone. Sheers feel light and airy; solids can create a calm backdrop; patterns add personality; and textured fabrics bring depth without necessarily adding a strong color. Think about whether you want the drapery to blend with the walls or stand out as an accent.

Look at samples in the actual room, if possible. Colors can change with daylight, lamps, wall color, and nearby furnishings. Also consider how the fabric will hang and move, not just how it looks in a small swatch.

3. Choose the Choose the Right Drapery Lining for Light Control and Privacy

Lining can help drapery hang well, protect the face fabric from sunlight, add body, and change how much light passes through. The right choice depends on the fabric and the room—not every window needs the same treatment.

A room-darkening or blackout lining may be useful in a bedroom when reducing outside light is important. A standard or light-filtering lining may be a better fit when you want to soften daylight without making the room too dark. Sheer drapery is often left unlined, although the best construction depends on the fabric and desired effect.

4. How High and Wide Should Custom Drapery Be?

Where drapery is installed can change the proportions of a room. Hanging the rod higher than the top of the window—or close to the ceiling when the architecture allows—can draw the eye upward and make the room feel taller.

For a tailored look, panels usually finish at or just above the floor. A slight break or a more generous puddle can suit some traditional or formal spaces, but it requires more upkeep and may not be practical in every home.

Rod width should be planned around the window, the amount of fabric, and how far the panels need to move when opened. If you want an unobstructed view, the rod may need to extend far enough beyond the window for the fabric to stack to the sides. There is no single side extension that works for every window.

5. Stationary Panels vs. Functional Drapery

Functional, traversing drapery opens and closes along a track or traversing rod, making it useful when you regularly want privacy or light control. Stationary side panels are primarily decorative and can frame a window without being moved. They can work well alongside existing blinds, shades, or shutters.

Before choosing, consider how often you will use the drapery, how accessible the window is, and whether the panels need to coordinate with another window covering.

6. Choose a Drapery Header or Pleat Style

The header is the way the top of the drapery is constructed and attached to the rod or track. Tailored pleats create a structured, finished look; other styles, such as grommet or rod-pocket headers, have a more casual feel. The best option depends on the room's style, the fabric, and whether the drapery needs to open and close smoothly.

7. Select the Right Drapery Rod and Hardware

Rods, tracks, rings, and brackets are part of the overall design. Consider the room's style and existing finishes, including lighting and other metal or wood details. Just as important, make sure the hardware suits the drapery's weight and intended function. A decorative rod and rings may suit stationary panels, while a compatible track or traversing rod is typically better for panels that will be opened and closed frequently.

8. Coordinate Custom Drapery With Your Existing Decor

Custom drapery does not need to match everything in the room. Instead, look for a relationship between the drapery and the existing furniture, rug, artwork, wall color, and finishes. Repeating a color or texture in two or three places can help the room feel cohesive without making it overly coordinated.

Is Custom Drapery Worth the Investment?

Custom drapery generally costs more than ready-made curtains because it is tailored to your windows and preferences. The total investment depends on factors such as window size, fabric selection, lining, fullness, hardware, and installation.

Custom curtains offer more flexibility in fabric, color, length, lining, and style. It can be especially valuable for tall ceilings, unusually sized windows, or when you want your window treatments to coordinate with the rest of your room.

Is Custom Drapery Right for Your Home?

Custom drapery is worth considering when you need a particular length or width, want more fabric and lining choices, or would like the window treatments to coordinate closely with your room. Ready-made curtains can also be a good solution for some spaces. The best choice depends on your windows, priorities, style, and budget.
